Beginning Blends – Letter s Blends
When children first learn to read, they usually start with CVC words (like cat, pen, dog). Once they are confident with these short words, the next step is to introduce consonant blends. Blends are two letters that come together while keeping their individual sounds. In this blog, we will focus on beginning blends with the letter S, give examples for each blend, and share tips on when and how to teach them.
What are S Blends?
S blends are groups of two consonants where the first one is always S, followed by another letter. Children pronounce both sounds quickly, without dropping either one. Learning blends helps kids read longer words smoothly and builds confidence in reading fluency.
Here are the most common S blends you can introduce to your child:
- sp – spot, spin, spoon, spill, space
- st – stop, star, step, stamp, stick
- sl – slip, slow, slug, sleep, slide
- sm – small, smile, smell, smart, smooth
- sn – snap, snow, snake, snack, sneeze
- sw – swim, swing, sweet, sweep, switch
- sc – scan, scar, scoop, school, score
- sk – skip, skin, sky, skate, skirt
