Beginning Blends – Letter R Blends

When children start moving beyond single-letter sounds, blends are the next important step in phonics. A blend is when two or more consonants are combined, and you can still hear each individual sound. Among the most common blends in English are the R blends.

What are R Blends?

R blends are groups of two consonants where the first consonant is followed by the letter R. While pronouncing them, both sounds are blended together smoothly. For example, in the word “frog”, you can clearly hear f and r blended together. R blends are best introduced after children are confident with consonant sounds, short vowels, and CVC words. Once students can blend three sounds smoothly (like cat, sun, map), they are ready to handle beginning blends.
